The Flapper went off on the 4th of August, hosting a trio of bands I wasn’t familiar with at the start of the night. Little did I know that by the end of the night, all three acts would be making their way into my playlists.

Equinox

Admittedly, it had been a few years since I’d last seen a local band live. And what a reminder to haunt the local venues Equinox were. Equinox exploded on stage from the very start, warming the crowd up all the way to the back. This small band’s large stage presence had my jaw on the floor from start to finish, what incredible heart they all put into their performance. Their latest song, Ephemera had incredible fry vocals and the sickest breakdown of their set. To say I was impressed would be an understatement!

Insurgent

Now, Insurgent I had heard of by name. These guys are known to absolutely mash up the Birmingham scene as is. So it’s needless to say I had incredible fun throughout their set. The synergy between the band as an act and a group of friends shone through in forms of cheeky banter and constant smiles. These guys throw out incredible vocals and wicked guitar solos non-stop, so keep your hair on! It was hard for me to pick out a highlight of their set, until I heard their song Zero Sum. Absolutely floored me from the start. Insurgent deserve their flowers and I am incredibly excited to see them grow.

Luna Kills

This group, all the way over from Finland were an awesome act to wait for. The start of their set felt as though the centre of the universe had shifted to that very room in the Flapper, with its exact centre being where the band were at all times. The group all moved with such effortless grace, sass and heart that I was unable to take my eyes away from the stage. It can take a lot to get me moving toward the end of a gig, low on energy and stone cold sober. Alas, I found myself incapable of remaining still throughout.

If you don ‘t know Luna Kills, or even if you do, they are an act I would recommend you see at least once. Alongside their incredible rhythms and angelic vocals is the showmanship of professional entertainers that deserve to be known the world over. Luna Kills’ track Waves had the whole crowd, including myself enamoured with their talent and raw star power. But it wasn’t the end, the privilege of hearing their latest single Lower live filled me with awe despite having not heard of Luna Kills before this night.

Equinox, Insurgent and Luna Kills; all of which I hadn’t known came together to build a night I will not forget any time soon. What an incredibly close and personal event at The Flapper in Birmingham. if you can see the three of them together, do it or you will regret it. All three acts deserve your attention.
